Vayu Seva

Vayu — the wind • Seva — in service of the breath
Intensity : Gentle
Duration : 60 min
Level : All levels
Best for : Vata
Tending the wind within — a breath-centred practice that uses pranayama to calm, warm and steady the Vata nervous system at its source.

Balancing Vata through the breath

Vata is governed by vayu — the wind, the principle of movement — and nowhere is that movement more direct than in the breath. When Vata is disturbed, the breath becomes shallow, rapid and irregular, and the nervous system follows it into agitation. Work skilfully with the breath, and you work directly on Vata itself.
Vayu Seva — service to the breath — is a practice built around pranayama. Through specific breathing techniques, it steadies the wind within, calms the nervous system, and restores the smooth, deep rhythm that keeps Vata in balance.
What happens in the class
The class combines gentle preparatory movement to open the body for breathing, followed by guided pranayama practice — with particular emphasis on Nadi Shodhana (alternate-nostril breathing), the classical balancer of the nervous system, along with extended, smooth exhalations that calm Vata. The practice is slow, internal and deeply settling, closing with a meditative rest. No prior breathwork experience is needed.
