Your Yoga Practice Should Change With the Season — Here Is Exactly How

Seasonal yoga · Ayurveda · Dubai summer edition

The yoga class you attended in January is not the right yoga class for you in July. Not because of your schedule or your mood — but because your body is constitutionally different in summer than it is in winter, and the practice must shift to match it.

Ayurveda understood this five thousand years ago. The classical system of seasonal health protocols — called Ritucharya in Sanskrit — is one of the most overlooked elements of the tradition. It recognises that the elements shift with the seasons, your dominant dosha fluctuates accordingly, and your yoga practice must be recalibrated two to four times a year to remain genuinely therapeutic.

In Dubai, this matters more than almost anywhere else on earth. When the temperature sits at 45 degrees from June through September, the physiological impact on your body — regardless of your constitutional type — is significant. Understanding what that means for your practice is not a nice-to-have. It is the difference between a summer that depletes you and one that genuinely sustains you.

Dubai summer is extreme Pitta season

In classical Ayurveda, summer is governed by Pitta — the dosha of Fire and Water. Heat, intensity, sharpness, inflammation. These are Pitta qualities, and the Dubai summer delivers all of them at an intensity that most other climates do not approach.

This means the entire population experiences an elevation of Pitta energy from May through September — not just Pitta constitutional types. Vata types feel it as increased irritability and disrupted sleep. Kapha types feel it as unusual fatigue and heat sensitivity. And Pitta types — already running hot — feel it as a sustained internal pressure that, without the right practice, builds toward burnout, inflammation and emotional volatility.

The prescription is not to stop practising. It is to practise in a way that acknowledges what the season is doing to your body, and deliberately counteracts it.

“The same yoga that healed you in winter may be harming you in summer. The season changed. The practice must change with it.”

What changes in summer — for every dosha

Across all three constitutional types, there are four universal adjustments that every practitioner in Dubai should make during the summer months.

  • Move your practice earlier. The window between 5:30am and 7:30am is the coolest and most energetically stable time of day in Dubai summer. Practising after 9am means practising into rising heat — which aggravates all three doshas.
  • Reduce intensity by 20%. Every type. Summer is not the season to push personal records or attempt the most demanding sequences of the year. The body is already working harder just to regulate temperature.
  • Lengthen your Shavasana. In summer, rest after practice is proportionally more important than at any other time of year. Add five minutes minimum to your usual rest.
  • Prioritise breathwork. Cooling pranayama — particularly Sheetali and Nadi Shodhana — becomes the most therapeutic tool available during the summer months, more valuable in some ways than the physical practice itself.

Beyond these universal adjustments, each constitutional type has its own specific summer recalibration.

🌬 Vata — Dubai Summer Prescription

What to practise: Slow, warm (not hot), grounding Hatha. Longer holds than usual. Same sequence every day — summer variability aggravates Vata more than any other season. Yoga Nidra twice per week. Morning practice only.

Reduce or avoid: Any fast flow or vigorous practice. Cold rooms with air conditioning directly on the body. Irregular scheduling. These amplify the Vata disruption that summer already creates.

🔥 Pitta — Dubai Summer Prescription

What to practise: Cooling Yin and restorative sequences. Moon salutations instead of sun salutations. Forward folds, twists and hip openers — the cooling postures. Sheetali pranayama daily. Evening practice preferred over morning.

Reduce or avoid: Hot yoga — completely contraindicated in Dubai summer for Pitta types. Any competitive or intensity-driven practice. Midday movement of any kind. Ashtanga or power yoga sequences.

🌿 Kapha — Dubai Summer Prescription

What to practise: Dynamic but earlier than usual — 5:30am to beat the heat. Shorter, more frequent sessions rather than one long session. Breath of fire in the morning to ignite energy before the summer heat sedates it.

Reduce or avoid: Restorative practice as a primary routine — summer heat already creates a kind of natural heaviness that Kapha does not need reinforced. Late morning or afternoon practice when the heat peaks.

The summer diet adjustment that changes your practice

What you eat in summer directly affects how you practise. In Ayurvedic terms, the digestive fire — Agni — weakens in summer heat, which means the body has less capacity to process heavy food. This is not a subjective feeling. It is a measurable shift in digestive enzyme activity that classical Ayurveda identified empirically and that modern gastroenterology confirms.

The summer dietary prescription, regardless of dosha type, moves toward lighter, cooling, more hydrating food. Cucumbers, coconut water, sweet fruits, coriander, fennel and mint. Smaller meals eaten more frequently rather than large meals two or three times a day. Room temperature water rather than ice cold — ice cold water in summer extinguishes the already-weakened digestive fire and creates the bloating and heaviness that many people mistakenly attribute to the heat itself.

For Pitta types specifically: avoid fermented foods, alcohol, spicy food and excess caffeine from June through September. These are the four fastest routes to Pitta inflammation in summer and the four things that will most directly undermine any benefit you receive from an otherwise correct practice.

The seasonal retake — why your quiz result shifts

One of the most important features of the Prakriti assessment is the seasonal retake. Your constitutional type — your Prakriti — does not change. But your current state of balance — your Vikriti — shifts with every season, and the prescription must shift with it.

In practice, this means taking the assessment four times a year and allowing the seasonal prescription to update. The yoga classes recommended in your summer result will be meaningfully different from your winter result — not because you have changed, but because the season’s elemental qualities interact differently with your constitution at different times of year.

A Vata type in winter needs warming and grounding. The same Vata type in Dubai summer needs grounding and cooling simultaneously — the warming element is already being provided by the external environment at a level that is more than sufficient.

A Kapha type in winter needs significant igniting — fire and dynamic movement to counteract the natural heaviness of the cool season. The same Kapha type in summer needs a modified version of that ignition — still dynamic, still early morning, but with attention to the cooling element that summer heat paradoxically demands even for a type that runs cold.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stop yoga completely during Dubai summer?

No. Stopping entirely allows the Kapha and Vata imbalances that summer can create to establish without any counterbalance. The prescription is to adjust — earlier timing, reduced intensity, more cooling breath, longer rest — not to stop. A modified practice in summer is significantly more beneficial than no practice.

Can I still attend hot yoga in summer in Dubai?

For Pitta types, hot yoga in Dubai summer is genuinely not recommended. You are adding artificial heat inside a room to a body that is already managing 45-degree external heat. The cumulative Pitta aggravation is significant. For Kapha types, one session per week in a warm (not hot) room can be maintained. For Vata types, a warm room — not hot — is fine for the grounding effect, but the pace should be slow.

What is the best time to practise yoga in Dubai summer?

5:30am to 8:30am is the optimal window for all three constitutional types during Dubai summer. This is before the heat becomes physiologically significant, before the Pitta energy of the day builds, and — for Kapha types — early enough to move through the Kapha morning hour (6am to 10am) with practice rather than letting it establish.
